Simone who? Simone Veil, born Jacob on July 13, 1927 in Nice, is a French magistrate and stateswoman. Originally from a Jewish family, she was deported to Auschwitz at the age of 16, during the Shoah, where she lost her father, brother and mother. She is a survivor with her sisters. She entered the judiciary as a senior official, then in 1974, she was appointed Minister of Health by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, who charged her with passing the law decriminalizing a woman's recourse to abortion. She therefore appears as an icon in the fight against discrimination against women in France. She sat on the Constitutional Council from 1998 to 2007, before being elected to the Académie française in 2008. By decision of President Emmanuel Macron, Simone Veil entered the Pantheon on July 1, 2018.
